Berry, Jean de France, duke of
(1340-1416)
   art patron, royal personage
A Capetian prince, Jean de France, duke of Berry, was born in Vincennes, the third son of jean II le BoN and Bonne de Luxembourg, and the brother of charles v. He was one of the guardians of his nephew, charles vi, and served as governor of Languedoc (1388). Removed from office because of the "Marmousets"—the grotesque church sculptures carved in derision of the king's advisers (1388)—he regained his authority when Charles VI went mad. An ostentatious patron of the arts, Jean de France commissioned from andré beauneveu the Psaulter de Jean de Berry, then from jacquemart de hesdin the Très Belles Heures and the Grands Heures, and from the limbourg brothers the Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry, one of the most beautiful illuminated manuscripts of its time.
